I Broke My Key Off In The Ignition: What Do I Do?

ignition key

Did your car key break off in the ignition? It can make you panic when this happens. Take a deep breath, there are some things that you can do to fix this situation. Sevan Locks and Doors is a locksmith in Washington that can help you with these types of mishaps.

Call A Locksmith

The first thing that you might want to do is call a locksmith. Locksmiths are going to have the equipment needed to remove the key. One of the good things about calling a locksmith is that they can usually do it without any damage to your car.

The tools that they are going to use are not usually ones you have laying around in your toolbox. This way you do not have to go and buy anything special for this one occasion. The plus side is they can even make a new key for you.

To Remove The Key Yourself

There are a few things that you can try on your own if you do not want to call a locksmith. Remember to be careful to not cause any extra harm to your ignition. Some ways that you can try are described below.

Needle-Nose Pliers

Needle-nose pliers can work if you can at least see some of the key sticking out. You will need to have an additional type of grip applied to the end of your pliers. To help grip the key and not slip off when you pull. You can use putty or some type of substance to grip the key. Once you have done this, you can pull and hopefully retrieve your key.

Metal Wire or Coat Hanger

You can try and use a metal wire, coat hanger, or even a paper clip. It is best if you bend it to make a hook shape. Very carefully insert the bent wire to reach the broken pieces. Swipe the area and try to hook the broken key parts and pull out slowly.

Which Is The Best Option

When you break your key off in your ignition, it is a real bummer. You may be aggravated and not sure what the best thing to do is. If you can not grab hold of it or get it out yourself, you may want to consider calling a locksmith.

By calling a locksmith, you are going to avoid damaging your ignition. The pulling, tugging, and twisting can cause bigger problems than just a broken-off key. A professional locksmith is going to have the knowledge to remove it the correct way.

Some Things Not To Do

In the midst of the moment, you may try anything and everything you can to get the key out of the ignition. There are some things that you do not want to try because they can cause substantial damage. That, in the end, will cost you to have fixed. Do not try:

  • Magnets
  • Screwdriver
  • Superglue

These options can cause further damage to your vehicle’s ignition. The main reason superglue is a bad idea is that it can actually adhere to the ignition if not placed carefully. The end result will be a locksmith using a drill to get the key out.
