I Locked My Keys in My Car in Seattle – Now What

locked keys in car

I locked my keys in my car – now what! The team here at Sevan Locks and Doors gets this question on a weekly basis. People call us in distress when they have locked themselves out of their car. If this happens to you, this is what we suggest.

1. When You Lock Your Keys in The Car, Don’t Panic

We know that when you lock your keys in your car, you are either on the way somewhere or you are now stranded wherever you went. It’s normal to panic, but it won’t help you work through the situation. Keep yourself calm and evaluate your situation so you can get back into your car quickly.

2. Check All of Your Doors, Windows, and Trunk

Before you make the first phone call, check to see if all of your doors are locked. The chances are they probably are, but just in case of a fluke, go ahead and check them all. Also, check to see if any windows are cracked. If so, you may be able to feed something through the crack to open the door.

If you have a car, you should check to see if the trunk is unlocked. Many cars have seats that can push down from inside of the trunk.

3. See if You Have Roadside Assistance

While it would be good to know this in advance, you can see if one of your credit cards or bank accounts come with roadside assistance. Sometimes, they will offer this as an added benefit for banking with them. If you aren’t in a huge hurry, you can call customer service and see if this is an option.

4. Call The Police in Cases of Emergency

If you’ve locked a pet or child into the car on a hot day, you need to get in touch with the police right away. Depending on the age of your child, you may be able to instruct them to unlock the door for you, especially if they were the ones that locked you out. There have even been news stories of pets that have been able to unlock the door by the owner pointing at the lock.

However, if it is a true emergency, call 911 for the fast assistance you need. If you’re not sure you can even wait as long as it’ll take for the police to arrive, find something to break the window if you have to. Just note that breaking the glass in a car is harder than it looks so it may take some doing.
